A contract for supply of 38 military and transport IL-76MD and IL-78MK aircraft with D-30KP-2 engines produced at Saturn Scientific and Production Association was signed on September 8, 2005 in Sochi between Rosoboronexport and the Chinese contractor. According to the contract, Saturn was to supply engines to the Tashkent Aviation Production Enterprise named after Chkalov (Uzbekistan) for aircraft kitting and supply spare D-30KP-2 engines for further supply to China.“Tashkent Aviation Production Enterprise failed to supply 38 military and transport IL-76MD and IL-78MK aircraft and due to that the contract was not executed. - It had a negative impact on the cooperation of the Russian and Chinese party during this period: the order portfolio dropped to an unacceptably low level”, as Igor Grigoryev, commercial director of Saturn Scientific and Production Association, commented.
Control of the situation was taken over by state authorities and, as a result, an agreement was reached to specifically fulfill the part of the contract that the Russian side is responsible for, that means to supply engines for the fleet that is available in China, so that Russia fulfills its contract obligations.
Namely, it concerns a fixed order for 55 D-30KP-2 engines and an optional one for 33 engines. The contract also envisages after-sale support both for the warranty and post-warranty period. Besides, negotiations with Chinese operators of Tu-154M aircraft have taken place and a contract with Saturn Scientific and Production Association for after-sale support of civil products is under preparation.
It is evident that the Chinese party recognizes the quality of overhaul and the quality of the engines produced at Saturn, so there is a certain prospective for continued cooperation to support the aircraft fleet available in China”, according to Igor Grigoryev.
