LAAD 2011, the largest aviation and defense show in Latin America held since 1997, has taken place on April 12-15 in Rio de Janeiro.Products of the leading defense manufacturers from the U.S., Germany, France and India were shown at LAAD 2011. India, in particular, has demonstrated Russian-Indian rocket systems Brahmos. In total, over 370 companies from 32 countries have participated in LAAD 2011.
Russia is a traditional participant of LAAD since the first show. Over these 14 years, Russian-Brazilian military and technical cooperation has developed a lot. Moreover, Russian experts agree that Russia's participation in LAAD in the previous years has created opportunities for large military contracts with Brazil for the Russian air defense systems and transport and military helicopters.
Russia continues its participation in the new tenders for supplies of arms and equipment to Brazil and other LA countries: Russia is ready to offer Su-35 4++ fighter (with an option of its licensed production in Brazil). As LAAD-2011 has confirmed, air defense systems are also a prospective line of military and technical cooperation with Brazil. For this framework, Russia is offering the unique Tor-М2E (Тор-М2Э) air defense systems with cutting edge technologies.
Russia's participation in LAAD-2011 was organized by Russian Technologies. Some of the other Russian participants are Rosoboronexport, Russian Helicopters, Rostvertol, Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant and Bazalt, as well as Almaz-Antey, Sukhoi, Irkut and Arzamas Machinebuilding Plant.
One of the main samples of Russian military equipment was Mi-35М that Brazil operates since 2010. Good contacts of Brazil's air forces with Rosoboronexport, the Russian supplier of helicopters, help to master the Russian equipment and gain flight hours under the extreme conditions of the Amazon selva.
Russian Technologies have held rounds of talks for the current and prospective military cooperation with the Defense Ministries of Brazil, Uruguay, U.S., Paraguay, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and other countries. A special landmark is the agreement for cooepration in civil and military projects between Russian Helicopters and Qualy Group Brazil envisaging promotion of 250 light Mi-34S1 helicopters to Brazil.
Consultations with the Brazilian and other LA colleagues will continue, in particular, within MAKS-2011 in Moscow in August 2011.
