Alexander Vatagin, General Director of Klimov, the leading Russian developer of gas turbine engines, has been interviewed by Russianavia.net at Helirussia 2011 to discuss the current achievements and the main prospects of Klimov on the Russian market.Mr. Vatagin, what results has Klimov achieved by 2011?
We have reached stable growth of profit - 1.5-2 billion rubles per year – and doubled our income against 2009. In 2010, we have made over 1 billion rubles of investments and our revenue was 400 million rubles. We started the project of building a new design and production center that is expected to be launched in 2013. In fact, we are talking about constructing a new factory that will produce the entire range of Klimov’s helicopter engines.
What are the plans for 2011?
Due to large expenses for technical overhaul and construction, we do not expect large margins in 2011. Our growth dynamics remains stable according to what we had planned in 2004.
What engines is Klimov presenting at Helirussia 2011?
The three new engines presented here are the result of Klimov’s unique technological developments. KV7-117V is a new engine with 3,000 + hp for the new Mi-38. VK-2500 PS is a result of deep modernization of a turboshaft engine for modernization of medium helicopters Mi-8МТ/Mi-17, Mi-14, Mi-24/35, Mi-28N, Ка-27/28/31, Ка-32, Ка-50/52. It has an antiscale control system for military helicopters that is compatible with any kind of weapons, even from mounts located very close to the engine.
We also present VK-800 turboshaft 5th generation engine for Ansat, Mi-54, Ka-126 and Ka-226 helicopters. We expect Ansat program and Mi-54 to develop with VK-800 engines.
What are the main objectives of the technical overhaul at Klimov that you have mentioned?
Our main priority is to reach the European level of productivity. The steps implemented towards it are technical overhaul, purchasing cutting edge equipment and changing the methods of production management. This is a particular challenge because it changes production management patterns that have formed in the industry over dozens of years. Our objective is to integrate the European management system. Currently, we have the largest productivity (per capita) in the Russian industry however it is still significantly lower than in Europe or USA. We have little time, and in the new engineering center that is being constructed at Klimov and is expected to start working at a very high level in 2013. We’re studying a similar project implemented in France and we try to take into account all the newest experience and developments.
How did the Soviet schools of helicopter construction manage to do without European experience and mentality?
In the Soviet times and conditions, there was no account for the costs, and all expenses were compensated by the state. The current conditions are harder. The system of accounting and organization has changed, especially in the last 20 years, and if an old company wants to be successful, it should adapt and implement the best practice. We borrow the best technologies that appear worldwide and have a very good testing base that will allow us reduce the time of testing through improved organization, technology and equipment. Our task is to implement it and increase our production of new engines.
