Russian Helicopters Completes Industry Consolidation and Hammers Out New Production Pattern, Russian Helicopters
Release Date: 2009-06-17
Paris – Consolidation of the Russian helicopter industry has entered its final stage. The Russian Helicopters managing company is aggressively developing its research and production capacity. It is finishing its own R&D centre in Moscow’s suburban Panki. Its new engineering centre, test production line, and research centre are nearing completion.
“We are objective in our evaluation of all that has happened to the Russian economy in recent years, particularly in helicopter manufacture,” Andrei Shibitov, CEO, Russian Helicopters, said. “Plenty of Russian-made helicopters that are being operated around the globe were manufactured in the distant times when the Soviet helicopter industry blossomed. Even now modifications of these helicopters still cover certain market segments. We are working on identifying the product line we be working with. We realize it’s difficult to compete with helicopter manufacturers on the global market without light and medium models in our product line…”
The company has developed a production pattern, modernization program and identified its business approach in terms of areas of expertise and competence of production units. The new industry pattern envisions that production facilities will ensure competitive advantages of the Russian industry both now and in the future. In expanding the product line, the company is poised for breakthrough with its new high-speed helicopter concept and the concept’s development and marketing programme. This will be an advanced product backed by key technologies within the 2015-2020 timeframe.
Russian Helicopters has established its strategy and targets for future years: the Russian helicopter industry is heading to seize up to 15% of the relevant global market.
However, new economic conditions call for budget optimization. The modern challenge of the Russian helicopter industry is to use its profits to modernize the industry and raise the competitiveness of its products rather than to offset the losses.
Russian Helicopters is going to keep the current production line, retaining the heavy helicopter segment and gradually expanding the midsize and light segments. The main goal is to keep hold of traditional markets. These are first of all India, China, Africa, and partly South-East Asia. The company is planning to expand to Latin America, become stronger in South-East Asia, and keep its positions in India and China. The shortest-term target is the launch of the new Mi-38, Ka-62, Ansat, and Ka-226T models. With them the company will be able to broaden its geographical presence and expand the number of market niches.
