NPO Saturn to launch the first AL-55I engine, Saturn Scientific and Production Association

Three AL-55I engines for HAL (Hindustan Aeronautic Ltd, India) have been tested by NPO Saturn at its subsidiary’s site, Lytkarino Engineering Plant in the Moscow region. In late December, 2008 the engines were shipped to India. Currently NPO Saturn representatives are preparing the engine for its first launch in Bangalore in the framework of flight development tests of HJT-36 aircraft.
The first flight of the flying laboratory equipped with the AL-55I engine took place on June 28, 2008. First stage of test flights of the engine on the Russian flying platform has been completed successfully.

AL-55I was integrated with HJT-36 on the Bangalore aerodrome in July, 2008. A series of tests, including engine operation within the plane’s power unit, was done at the aerodrome.

In August, 2008 the engine was tested at the Central Institute of Aviation Motors to measure a range of important technical characteristics of the engine and its systems; as a result, the engine got a positive resolution from the Institute.

According to the contract with HAL, 6 test engines AL-55I for HJT-36 are being produced.

AL-55I was created on the basis of AL-55 basic gas generator that allows launching production of a family of competitive multipurpose engines of a similar type for the Russian and international market.

NPO Saturn is doing all the works for production setup, certification and licensed production support of test engines AL-55I in India on a parity basis with Ufa Engine Industrial Association (UMPO).

AL-55I is created upon order of HAL for HJT-36 training aircraft in the framework of the international contract that entered in force in August, 2005.
