A successful year for airlines

According to the results of 2008 summed up by Rosaviatsia (Federal Air Transport Agency), Russian airlines have transported over 50 mln passengers for the first time since the Soviet times. Growth of air transportations over the year amounts to 11% as compared to 2007. Volume of international transportations has grown by 13.6% up to 23.7 mln people; domestic transportations — by 8.9% up to 26.4 mln people. Passenger traffic of Russian airlines has grown by 11.3% up to 123.5 bln in passenger kilometers. Volumes of cargo and post transportation have grown by 5.8% up to 775,000 t. …

… The major airlines are preparing for official reporting of the year’s results. Transaero informs that its volume of transportation in 2008 has grown 1.5 times. According to Andrey Martirosov, General Director of Utair, the company experienced a reduction of demand for flights: in August it fell from 27% to 10.5%. GTK Rossiya reports a 7.4% growth of passenger flow up to 3.5 mln passengers.

… Experts agree that it won’t be possible to assess objectively all negative consequences of the crisis before the end of winter schedule however there are some positive market trends as well. “Volume of transportations is attached to kerosene prices - with a lag of about 6 months. Fall of fuel prices that started in Q3, 2008 should bring a positive impact by the end of Q1, 2009”, according to Oleg Panteleev, head of the analytical service of Aviaport.
