Today, Mi-171Sh is one of the most popular Russian military and transport helicopters in the world. According to experts, Mi-171Sh is remarkable for its high technological and operational characteristics. Due to a powerful range of arms and defense equipment, this helicopter is known as "Terminator" in the media. Mi-171Sh has shown brilliant performance in a few local military conflicts, during antiterrorist operations, police operations, counter-drug traffic operations, search and rescue works, in severe mountain landscapes and under hot temperatures.

Supplies of Mi-171Sh to international clients started after a few sets of tests in 2002. More than 120 helicopters were supplied through Rosoboronexport to the Middle East, South East Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe. It is notable that Mi-171Sh helicopters were ordered by both Russia's traditional partners in military cooperation and NATO members. In 2005-2008, 26 Mi-171Sh helicopters were delivered to Croatia and Czech Republic.

In 2009, the Russian Ministry of Defense placed an order for the first batch of Mi-171Sh in the frame of massive modernization of the Russian army. In 2010, supplies of Mi-171Sh continued.

Following the concept of procuring modern-only and efficient-only equipment, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced specific requirements to the helicopters, such as new systems to increase the combat efficiency of the helicopter, special equipment for search and rescue operations and medical appliances. For the combat tasks, the helicopters were equipped with air attack protection and avionics for flights in bad weather and in any time of the day.

Today, the Russian Ministry of Defense is considering to continue orders for Mi-171Sh in 2011.
