EURASIAN TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS FORUM organized by Vedomosti, a major Russian business daily, on April 1, 2010 in Ritz Carlton, is a successful attempt of making a single conference brand featuring the main representatives of the Russian transport community with the aim of establishing an efficient dialog among the federal and regional government, the business, the legislative and regulatory authorities, and top-notch experts and analysts. The main focus of the Forum was made on the concerns about undermining the potential of Russia as a transport hub between Europe and Asia and developing perspective investment lines and a modernized infrastructure
The EURASIAN TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS FORUM was particularly outstanding for the fervent interest of the participants towards the issues that top the agenda of transport companies like the Russian Railways, airlines like Sky Express, S7 and Region-Avia, representatives of the Ministry of Transport, market regulators like the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, the Federal Air Transport Agency, as well as the regional government. Valuable insights on the current trends of the Russian transport industry were presented by Valery Okulov, Deputy Minister of Transport of Russia, Vadim Morozov, First Vice-President of Russian Railways, Sergey Morozov, Governor of the Ulyanovsk region, and Sergey Shishkarev, Chairman of the Transport Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

The three main areas addressed by the Forum concerned transport infrastructure and logistics, aviation and railway transport respectively. Russia’s aim is to bridge Europe and Asia in terms of the transport corridors and cargo and transit services due to its unique geographic position that, as the leaders of the industry agreed, should be exploited more efficiently and requires resources and investments for its efficient fusion with the Eurasian transport and logistics system. Similarly, the air transport needs efficient business development strategies for the new economic environment. Ports and airports are looking for best combinations with railway transportation hubs. The future dynamics of the railway transport has been assessed in the view of its reforms. Besides, one of the main activities in the industry is related to creating port facilities and special economic zones that are regarded as new opportunities for modernization of the transport sector.
One of the key regions that showcase the development of a special economic zone is Ulyanovsk, well-positioned in the European part of Russia by the Volga River and home to strategically important aviation facilities and maintenance centres.

As Sergey Morozov, Governor of the Ulyanovsk region, has commented during the Forum in his interview for Russiaenergy.com, “As the Chairman of the government of the region where the development of aviation and transport cluster is the main priority, I would like to note that over the last years the federal centre has undertaken a few serious steps to support the airlines in terms of renewal of the aircraft and helicopter fleet and expanding the flight routes. After we started positioning Ulyanovsk region as Russia’s prospective aviation hub at various international exhibitions, we have managed to convince the federal government of the unique position of Ulyanovsk on the Russian aviation map. The EURASIAN TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS FORUM can help the region take yet another step in advancing its interests and an efficient platform to establish a dialogue among the different representatives of the industry to understand better our common concerns and share the best practice to implement the most efficient strategies”.

The final stage of the Forum was dedicated to investments in the transport business and the importance of attracting investors in the Russian transport and infrastructure. Some of the new solutions to old problems underline the importance of cooperation, efficient fundraising and optimization of costs. The Forum provided case studies on the experience of sharing the risks between the state and the business in joint investment projects.
