China has always been the market for Sukhoi aircrafts. What is the purpose of your visit to this Airshow and what is your company planning to demonstrate here? The Chinese market is crucial for us because RD-93, a modified engine for the Chinese light jet Super 7 (also known as FC-1), has been manufactured on the basis of RD-33 engine for Mig-29. 42 engines have been shipped for this aircraft; next year we are to supply another 43 engines. Further down the line, we plan to increase the volume of our sales in China. According to our estimations, the need of the Chinese for our engines is about 500 items.
We are implementing a successful co-program with our Chinese partners and we are open and ready for its active further development for our mutual benefit. The Russian party is also represented by JSC Klimov, our main engine developer. In general, we have created a good and organized mechanism of work.
But that exceeds the total amount of production in Russia over several years!
The matter is that our Chinese partners have developed FC-1 - a good aircraft that is the best option for many countries in terms of price/quality ratio with good export prospects. Our interest towards the Chinese market is naturally related to this product.
Russian manufacturers of engines have been much criticized due to unsatisfactory after-sale servicing. Do you consider long-term relations for after-sale servicing?
Of course, for us after-sale servicing is the top issue. We have already started to organize maintenance and repair of RD-93 engines in China. Particularly, we take measures to organize engine repair at the Lyang Plane Aeroengine Corporation. Chinese production will be based there.
Does this plant belong to AVIC-1?
As you know, all Chinese aviation construction enterprises are currently united under a single corporation that formerly was AVIC-1 and AVIC-2. As far as we know, Lyang Plane Aeroengine Corporation will also be included there. We are in direct negotiations with the plant; engines will be manufactured in Russia, maintenance and repair will be based in China.
Russian and Chinese cooperation in the sphere of aviation is a delicate issue as there are different opinions about whether Russia should transfer its technologies and know-how to China. Does MMP named after V.V.Chernyshev plan to transfer its research and technologies to China or do you envisage only commercial cooperation?
We focus on repair technologies. As far as engine production is concerned, this issue has not been raised in practical terms by either party. We negotiate the development of RD-93, a modified engine with a much higher thrust. It is possible that this modification will be produced not only in Russia but in China as well. However, it is still at the stage of preliminary negotiations and it is unclear what the ultimate result would be.
Currently your company is one of the few that installs its engines for foreign aircraft. Do you have other projects apart from FS-1?
Not yet.
